A. R. Johnson,Spotswood
The Werribee Shire area covered a vast area in 1915-1920 and there are names on the honor board from Werribee, Tarneit, Truganina, Little River, Mount Cottrell, Metropolitan Farm, West Footscray, Melton, Williamstown, Laverton, Newport, Bacchus Marsh and Spotswood.
Whilst this name and initial appears in the Werribee Shire Banner's Roll of Honor and on the RSL Honor Board, no soldier could be found with the name of A. R. Johnson who had any link to Werribee or Spotswood.
Johnson, A.R. from Spotswood first appeared in the Roll of Honor, Werribee Shire Banner, 20 February 1919, p.1. The week before there was only one Johnson, W. G. (killed in action).
In the Werribee Shire Banner, 20 February 1919, p.1 there were four Johnsons in the Roll of Honor. Two of these were from Spotswood and two from Werribee.
AIF Project has 308 Johnsons in Victoria and there was one from the Spotswood area. Johnson, Henry Thomas No.1914 whom we have already placed within the project.
The National Archives of Australia has 1,724 Johnsons listed in Australia and none of those were from Spotswood.
In the Werribee Shire Banner, 13 February 1919, p.3 the Shire Secretary had placed the following notice: “THE COUNCIL desires to thank the Ladies and Gentlemen who assisted in the preparation of the Shire Roll of Honour. The list of names is published below, for general information before being placed on the Board. It is desired to have the list absolutely correct, and the Council will be pleased to be advised before the end of February if any error or admission is noticed. Your assistance will be appreciated.
