Biographical Text
No.2363 Able Seaman Ernest Moss Rayner
Ernest Moss Rayner was already an enlisted member of the RAN when WW1 broke out – having enlisted on 12 November 1912.
War Service
He and Richard Joseph Baldwin (Seaman Richard Joseph Baldwin, No.3146) both enlisted in the Australian Navy as Seamen. Werribee Shire Banner, 29 April 1915, p.2.
At the outbreak of war, Ernest was an Ordinary Seaman aboard HMAS Sydney and would, therefore, have been involved in the historic battle with the German ship, Emden.
Ernest also saw service aboard Cerberus, Gayundah and Encounter.
His seven years of service ended on 10 December 1919.
Post War
Ernest Moss Rayner died in 1977 and was cremated at Fawkner Memorial Park on 2 December 1977.
Service records for members of the Navy are quite scant but a digital copy of Ernest’s service card can be found on the National Archives of Australia’s website naa.gov.au
