Biographical Text

No.79706  Alexander Grant
Alexander Grant was born on 30 September 1898, in Reculver Kent, England to William Henry Grant and Lilian Woodland.  According to family tree records on ancestry.com Alexander had the following siblings:
  • Christina Lilian
  • Winifred Marjorie
  • Charles William
  • William Henry
  • Gladys May
All were born in Kent.

The 1901 English Census, records that Alexander's father was a commissioner, 36 years of age and that Christina, Winifred, Alexander and Charles were living there with him and Lilian in Kent, England.

Alexander's father William Henry Grant died on 24 August 1904, in Torquay, Devon, England

The 1911 English census confirms that Lilian and the four children Alexander, Charles, William and Gladys are living in Ransley House, Kingsford Street, Mersham, Kent. Her occupation was Laundry Work and she is listed as the head of the family.

The family immigrated to Australia in August 1914 and Lilian married John Charles Murphy in 1915 in Victoria, Australia.
According to family tree records on Ancestry.com, Alexander had two half sisters, Nora Murphy and Julia Kath Murphy(1916).

War Service
Alexander enlisted in the Army at Melbourne Victoria on 21 June 1918. He was aged 19 years and 9 months and he was 6 feet inches.  Alexander weighed 189 pounds and had a chest measurement of thirty-six and half inches.  His complexion was fair, with dark blue eyes and light brown hair.
All of this was recorded at the time of his enlistment.

Alexander went through the training program but was discharged on 24 December 1918 with no reason on record, however it would be safe to assume, that it was due to the end of the War on 11 November 1918.

Post War
Alexander married Estelle Ruby Fallon in 1939 and they lived in StKilda, Essendon, Mulgrave and Oakleigh areas over the course of their marriage.
There are no known children noted anywhere.

Alexander's mother died in 1966 in Bendigo Victoria, under another name Lilian Murphy (according to a note in Alexander's army records this was her maiden name) however her father's name is listed as Henry Woodland and her mother is Julia West. The Murphy has come from her marriage to John Charles Murphy after arriving in Australia.

Alexander died in 1972 and was buried in Ferntree Gully Cemetery.  Estelle was also buried with Alexander, when she passed away in 1999.
