War Service
Henry Joseph Sheppard embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27 September 1915, as part of the 23rd Battalion, 4th Reinforcements.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 29 July 1916.
On 20 November 1916, he was transferred to Administrative duties in London.
On 26 December 1916, he embarked for Australia on board HT Nestor, having been returned to Australia for "family reasons".
Henry Sheppard disembarked, in Melbourne, on 9 March 1917 and was discharged for "family reasons" on 26 March 1917.
Further research has shown that Henry was the third son of Henry and Elizabeth Sheppard to join the AIF. Both older Sheppard sons were killed in action and the timing of the death of Henry's second brother, Bertie, coincided directly with the decision to return Henry to Australia.
An article regarding the three brothers was published in the Advertiser (Footscray), 2 September 1916, p.2.
