War Service

Harold George Smith enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 16 July 1915.  Being under the age of 21 years, his parents' permission was needed and given. 

On enlistment, Harold was described as: 5 feet, 6 ¼ inches in height; 9 stone 10 pounds in weight and; having blue eyes, brown hair and a sallow complexion. His religion was Church of England. 

Harold embarked, as part of the 6th Field Company of Engineers, from Sydney on 24 November 1915 aboard HMAT A40 Ceramic.

After serving time in France and Belgium, Harold returned to Australia, aboard Castalia, on 30 May 1919.  He received his discharge on 22 July 1919.
