Biographical Text

A. Levings, Werribee
The Werribee Shire area covered a vast area in 1915-1920 and there are names on the honor board from Werribee, Tarneit, Truganina, Little River, Mount Cottrell, Metropolitan Farm, West Footscray, Melton, Williamstown, Laverton, Newport, Bacchus Marsh and Spotswood.

There are seven Levings in the National Archives of Australia, six of them from Victoria, but none with an obvious link to Werribee. The same seven are also listed in the AIF project.

One of the listed members was Alfred Charles Levings, who was born in Gravesend, Kent England. He was 28 years and 9 months old when he enlisted on 9 September 1914 in Melbourne. His next of kin was his mother in England, Julia Levings. She lived at Forge House, Green Street, Dartford, Kent, England.

"Levings, A. from Werribee" first appeared in the Roll of Honor, Werribee Shire Banner, 13 February 1919, p.3. This was the final list of all names that was passed to Council. Readers were asked to advise the council if there were any mistakes or members not on the list before the end of February.

There was an Alfred Levings and a Mary Alice Levings listed on the Australian Electoral Rolls for Corio Werribee in 1914. But no link between him and the member on the honour board could be found.
