No.22925 George Walter Dempsey
George was born at Surrey Hills in 1896 to Thomas Dempsey and Emily Alice Ray. They had married in Victoria in 1894.
His siblings were:
- Herbert Thomas Dempsey (A.I.F. No 855)
- Percy Faris Dempsey (1900-1959)
In 1909, the Dempsey family were living on the Metropolitan Farm at Werribee where his father was working as a labourer. Census records have them living there until after 1914. His father Thomas passed away on 7 March 1915 in Werribee, Victoria at the age of 52.
War Service
George embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 20 May 1916.
He proceeded overseas from South Hampton to France on 30 December 1916.
He was promoted to Corporal in the field on 30 March 1918.
On 2 June 1918 he was gassed and returned to England where he was admitted to Kitchener Military Hospital in Brighton.
George returned to Australia on 11 December 1918 on HT Saxon. Disembarking at Melbourne on 30 January 1919 and was discharged approximately two months later on 20 March 1919.
Post War
George married Bessie Kathleen Sherburn in Victoria in 1921 when he was 25 years old. They had four children during their marriage.
George died on 24 July 1957 at the age of 61 and is buried in Springvale Botanical Cemetery. Bessie died on 4 August 1994 in Australia at the age of 94.
