Residents were unable to do anything as they did not have a reticulated water supply. Nearby buildings that were smouldering were saved by using wet bags and buckets of water carried across the road from the Shire horse trough.

The description reads: Pictured above is the Wyndham Common School, referred to in this week's Banner instalment of An Historic School, written by local historian, Mrs. M. G. McNaughton. The picture, taken in the early 1870s, shows the pupils and schoolmaster, Mr John Baker (extreme right). -

William Ison.
Mr. William Ison, one of the areas first residents, was born in Cambridge, England in 1832, the eldest of 15 children.
He left England on 18 October 1855 aged 22 years and arrived at Portland, Victoria in 1855.

Wheelwright,
Watton Street,
Werribee.Phelan's Blacksmith Shop was one of the earliest of family businesses established in the area.
The wheelwright was situated on the site which today is occupied by the Westpac Bank.
In the 1950s, with the phasing out of horses, the premises were taken over by panel beaters, Bowan and Miller, who were not there very long.
In the early to mid 1960s, the old building was demolished. -
Western Produce,
Corner of Watton and Cherry Streets,
Werribee.Western Produce was located near the railway crossing at Cherry Street.
David Thompson came here from Newstead about 1919 to manage Keast's Mill (located along the Cherry Street Railway crossing on the Werribee Station side).
A few years later Keast's Mill burnt down and Thompson bought Ison's Mill.
Thompson conducted this business until early 1980 when it was taken over by Max Hayes. Once it was pulled down it became a Woolworths supermarket.
Thompson also purchased the hardware business of F.H. Oldis located opposite on Cherry Street, Werribee. This was later owned by Tom Powell who conducted it for many years.
Today it is a Bunnings store. -
Westbourne Grammar School opening.

Watton Street Bridge foundation stone plaque.
This stone was retained when the original bridge was widened by the Country Roads Board in 1967.
The original foundation stone was laid by the Hon. George Graham MLA Minister of Public Works on April 2 1892. Budge and Lake were the contractors and J. McDowie was Chief of Works.

Water tower,

Werribee.Melbourne's first water supply tower made of cast iron now at the MMBW Farm, Werribee.
It was removed from East Melbourne where it supplied drinking water to Melbourne in the 1850s and re-erected at Cocoroc in 1892 to be used as a back-up supply in case of mains failure.
The tank remained in use in Cocoroc until l1924. It was drained in 1929 after a reservoir was built nearby to supply water to houses and stock during summer.
The tank originally stood near the corner of Albert and Gisborne Streets, East Melbourne. It is on the Victorian Heritage Register, No. H1416. -

Tyzack's corner store,

Werribee.The business was started by the Evans family about 1887 and was run by them for several years. The Tyzack family took it over before the first World War, circa 1910.
In the early 1960s it was taken over by people named Deneys who had several of these stores. They were there until that group of buildings were demolished in the early 1970s.
